Is the Heat on?

Is heat really needed to support life?
Do warmer climates maintain a better quality of life?
Should an author use a variety of elements to maintain the reader’s attention?
What is that spreadsheet and graph telling you?

A cross curricular integrated unit that explores energy transfer. Students read Jack London’s short story To Build a Fire, compare climates and populations of different regions in North America and Europe, conduct experiments comparing insulators and design a technology that harnesses solar energy, and compare and order rational numbers. Technology is incorporated using a blog, google docs, and multimedia software.
